Imam Al-Shafi'i: The Defender of Hadith and Master of Jurisprudence
Born in 767 AD in Gaza, Palestine Muhammad ibn Idris Al-Shafi'i grew up as an orphan in poverty. His mother carried him to Mecca as a child, where he memorized the Holy Quran at the age of seven — and the entire Muwatta of Imam Malik by the age of ten!
A Journey in Pursuit of Knowledge
Poverty never stopped him from seeking knowledge. He would write on bones and stones when he could not afford paper. He traveled to Madinah to study under Imam Malik, then to Iraq to learn from the students of Imam Abu Hanifa — combining the wisdom of two great schools of thought.
The Shafi'i School of Thought
Imam Al-Shafi'i founded the Shafi'i Madhab — one of the four major schools of Islamic jurisprudence. He was also the first scholar to systematize the principles of Islamic legal theory in his landmark book "Al-Risala" — the first work on the science of Usul al-Fiqh in Islamic history.
His Intellectual Genius
Al-Shafi'i possessed a rare mind and an extraordinary memory — said to memorize everything he read on the first reading. He was also a gifted poet, and among his most famous verses:
"We blame our time, yet the fault is ours — our time has no fault but us."
His Humility and Character
Despite his vast knowledge, Al-Shafi'i was a model of humility. He said:
"I never debated anyone without wishing for them to be guided and supported."
And famously:
"My opinion is correct but may be wrong — and the opinion of others is wrong but may be correct."
His Death
Imam Al-Shafi'i passed away in 820 AD in Egypt, and was buried in Fustat, Cairo. His tomb remains a visited site to this day, drawing visitors from across the world.
"Knowledge is what benefits — not merely what is memorized."
— Imam Al-Shafi'i
